Thanks Dad
For dinner tonight I grilled some fish that my dad brought back from his fishing trip to Canada. I offered some to Zoe: DO YOU WANT TO TRY SOME OF THE FISH PAPA CAUGHT IN CANADA?
And then she burst into tears and put her head on the table and sobbed.
What is her problem?? My husband and I were at a loss. Until I finally calmed her down enough to get it out of her, between sobs she told me that she doesn’t want to eat anything that was once alive.
Okay, I get that. And if you know Zoe you completely can understand where she is coming from here, because she saved a butterfly the other week. It was a very big deal. And then she saved another butterfly at camp, and then someone stepped on it (that butterfly was not as lucky as the previous butterfly), and when I picked her up from camp she was practically inconsolable. So, I’m not surprised at this — not that we eat butterflies, just to clarify.
So you heard it here folks, my 7 year old is declaring herself a vegetarian. I don’t know how she’s going to get around the whole chicken finger thing, and Happy Meals.
And you know what Dad? I blame all of this on you. Thanks a lot.
sounds like the trouble we had when we served some of the chickens we’d raised here on the farm. youngest daughter and son didn’t have any issues, bu my oldest — let’s just say she’s more citified. we make this chicken and dumplings dish all of the kids absolutely love, especially left over. and we were having lunch that next day and discussing how it tastes so much better because it was our own chickens. my oldest — she’s about 14 at the time, I think — she catches on and looks up and says “these are our chickens?” yup, I said. “that’s disgusting,” she declares, and goes back to eating.
I clocked her at vegetarian for about .43 seconds. we are firm believers in people knowing where food comes from, and not hiding the facts of food once having a life. and they get over it when the delightful aroma of the mcnugget hits them just right.

Both of my kids know where our food comes from. They love animals but understand that some we eat. I’m not sure how thrilled they would be if we raised an animal & then ate it…but for now that isn’t an issue. Maybe for now just don’t tell her that it was a fish that was swimming earlier.
