Olive the cat has a cataract

Olive is my four year old cat, if she were a person I’d tell you that she’s socially awkward. But since she’s a cat, I don’t know how else to explain her but to say that she adores me, but I can only pet her during night time hours or when I’m in the bathroom (that’s where I keep the cat treats). She only eats the cheap Whiskers crunchy treats, never the healthier treats, and absolutely NOT the soft treats. When she plays, she’s always kinda doing it in slow motion, like she’s REALLY thinking about how her paw is moving and concentrating on her target. She sometimes hits her target. She tries to scratch at the scratching post, but she gets stuck and usually I have to help remove her claws from it.

We’ve always thoughts she was a little mentally challenged, if you know what I mean. But she’s really cute and super fluffy and she loves me — just look at her ear fluff!

Olive

Well, this weekend we had some outside the litter box issues and I was able to narrow it down to her. I took her to the vet this afternoon to see if there were any issues and it turns out she’s got a cataract on her right eye that is hardly noticeable when looking at her, however with the lights off and the vet’s eye looker-atter-thingy I could clearly see it. Poor baby has a visibility of about 10% in that eye! This explains quite a bit, she doesn’t move around the house too much because she can’t see very well. She’s slow at playing because she really has to focus to see her target. And, she most likely doesn’t have any depth perception.

Sad kitty. :(

Olive and I waiting for the vet

I need to monitor her eye for any changes, such as swelling or redness, and we go back to the vet in January to see what kind of change there is. It’s possible that this has been there for a long time. In the meantime, litter boxes have been relocated to a place where she can easily see them — the dark basement just wasn’t working for her anymore (understandably).
