• He fired Heidi and we owe the kid 30 cents

We’ve arrived in North Platte, Nebraska. It was a pretty good ride, just a couple snafus.

    SNAFU NUMBER ONE:

No one anticipated the toll booth in Rockford, Illinois. The UNMANNED toll booth. The one where my husband and I looked at each other and dug deep into our pockets for 60 cents worth of change to toss into the bucket and realized that we only had 40 cents.

    THE KID! SHE’S GOT CHANGE!

I reached into the backseat, grabbed her backpack and rifled through it in search of her wallet. The entire time my husband is on the edge of freaking out because I’m taking too long. I found enough change to add up to 60 cents — and then he dropped a dime under his seat. The entire time the kid is making us sign loan paperwork to guaranty that she’s going to get that 20 cents 30 cents back.

    SNAFU NUMBER TWO:

He needs a Starbucks. I mean he NEEDS a Starbucks. And Heidi, the GPS lady, has him going in circles around this business complex and he can’t see the Starbucks anywhere. At one point Heidi is saying: TURN LEFT, TURN LEFT. And my husband is yelling at her: SHUT UP! SHUT UP! SHUUUUUUUUT UUUUUUUUUUUUUUP!!!

And then he reached for her as if he was going to strangle her until she couldn’t give directions ever again.

That’s when Collette, the lovely British chick, took over for Heidi. I think my husband is going to write a letter to Garmin about Heidi’s lack of navigational skills.

Tomorrow we’ll be up early, making the final leg of our trip to Denver.
