The final countdown is here and the Tyranena Beer Run Half Marathon is this Saturday. It’s my 12th half marathon and I’m totally ready. Totally. Darth Vader is ready too and I can’t wait to see how his race day goes. The last time he raced this distance was in 2006, and he blew it out of the water! Since he’s strictly a treadmill runner, I couldn’t just let him wake up on race day and wonder what in the world he was going to wear for 45 degrees and probably some wind (15 mph is the forecast). He’s now owns his first pair of running tights, running underwear, hat, gloves and a pullover half-zip equipped with thumb holes.
I’ve got my outfit all planned. I’ve spent the last few weeks trying out different shirts and half-zips. I like half-zips the most because of the zipper. Too cold? Zip-up. Too warm? Unzip. Repeat a zillion times. My race day plan is simple, run .90 miles, walk .10. It’s what I’ve done for all of my long training runs and it’s worked well. By 10 miles by legs were still feeling great and my overall pace picked up with the walking breaks. The course is going to be full of friends, and I’m looking forward to seeing so many of them! Madison and Milwaukee really need to be located closer.
My fuel plan is also solid: Nuun tablets and Salted Caramel Gu — which is basically the best flavor of Gu ever. Have you tried it? Never as there been so much delicious in a gel pack.
The only snag in my plan is new shoes. The dreaded shoes. I’ve been switching off between Brooks Ghost 5 and Nike Pegasus since May. My new Pegasus arrived in July and it turns out that feet prefer the Ghosts. I’ve worn the tread right down to nothing on the Ghosts, so much that the sides of my feet ache towards the end of even a 5-6 mile run and then for hours after. I have a new pair of Brooks Ghost 6 in my possession, but haven’t put any miles on them yet. Guess who is breaking in new shoes on Saturday? Me!
