Paleo: Week 1

One week of eating semi-to-mostly Paleo is in the books. How did it go? Well, I lost three pounds. I’m not going to get too excited about that because I can gain those three pounds back in about 20 minutes if I’m not careful. I feel great and my skin looks good too. I’ve been reading The Paleo Diet by Loren Cordain, I’m about 75% done and I’ve learned a lot. Granted, some of it is a refresher from when I was paining attention to this stuff a number of years ago, but from a runner’s point of view a lot of it is making sense.

What did I eat? A lot of chicken, a few lean hamburgers without the bun, a few pork chops, many salads, more bananas than I ever have and a lot of oranges. I tried a pear, but it’s too crunchy and makes my teeth ache. (Oh, I’ve also been dealing with an infected root canal. It’s been fun.)

I haven’t had a bagel all week long. Or a bowl of cereal. It’s been hard. It’s also been easy. This is a diet that is perfect for plain eaters like me. I don’t like my food smothered in stuff. I prefer my salad to just be romaine lettuce with olive oil and handful of slivered almonds.

I am wondering if a lot of my breathing issues I’ve been having this winter was due to all of the dairy I was eating. I do have this Greek yogurt addiction ….. but I’ve only had a few yogurts this week instead of one every day as usual.

The sugar has been the most interesting. I take sugar in my coffee, which I’m not willing to give up, but I did stop eating all sweets. Today I had a bridal shower to go to and there was cake, my first baked good and real sweet of the week. Wowza! What a jolt of sugar!
