Today I turned 40
I started my day off by going to my power yoga class where I did the splits. On both sides. And when the lady next to me commented on how well I did the splits I turned to her and said, “Thanks! Today I turned 40.” Then I smiled and flashed her my braces.
According to my husband I could be confused with a teenager, especially when I pull out my cellphone and text message my BFF. I think I text message my brother more than I text message my BFF though.
Anyhow. After I performed the splits in my yoga class I helped carry the patio furniture up from the basement, and then Zoe and I went out to lunch and picked up my birthday cake.
It was an Italian coconut cake from my favorite bakery that we get all of our cakes from. Three times a year we get a cake and since it was my cake I got to choose. It’s was a four layer genoise (yellow cake) with cream cheese buttercream filling with coconut and pecans sprinkled in between the layers and then buttercream and cover sides with toasted coconut. When I picked up the cake there was a lady at the counter who was picking up her own cake, but she loved mine so much (even though she only looked at it) that she told the baker that she needed to order one. And the baker said, “the next time?” And the lady said, “no, I’ll order it right now.” So I asked her what the occassion was and she told me it was “to have cake.”
I’ll have to remember that the next I want cake, and then call the bakery and order a 10″ cake that says:
I just wanted some cake
I didn’t know what to put on my birthday cake, so my husband picked it out and thought that his grandfather would appreciate that it said Kimberly rather than Kim. He’s the only one that ever called me that.
My birthday party was fantastic! My husband was in charge of the grill and he made brats and polish sausages. He also made a pork tenderloin in the smoker. He did a great job! Most everyone who was important to me was able to come to celebrate my birthday, which really meant a lot to me. Thank you for all the birthday wishes and for making my birthday one of the best ever!
I’d post more pictures, however someone turned one of the dials on the camera and it took crap pictures until the very end of the party. I have a very nice photo of my friend’s 2 year old daughter though. If you were at my party and have pictures please email them to me!

Once again, welcome to the 40’s.
Your cake is beautiful and looks delish! I’m glad most everyone was able to come celebrate with you. Hope you can get some pictures from that day…but if not, you have the memories.
Congratulations on reaching 40. Now life really begins.
Best wishes for your birthday and the year ahead.

I was directed here by someone who knows of my passion for all things cake. Happy belated birthday and I am totally getting that cake for myself at the first opportunity.
Happy (Late) Birthday,
I wish I could do the splits and now I want cake! I might take your idea to my bakery though!
*Late Mingle too*
I was there and got to taste the cake. It was to die for cake. I was slicing the cake and any one who said “I’ll take a small slice,” was back for the more. Everyone take note this is the cake that I want for my birthday.
Can’t believe that 40 years have snapped by so fast. You had a very beautiful day and we will all have wonderful memories of this eventful day.
Happy Belated Birthday, Sister!
I’m glad 40 was easy for you – it was for me, too.
Age really is just a number.
