Scientists are usually happier using superscripts:  1 million is 1 to the 6th power; 1 billion is 1 to the 9th power; 1 trillion is 1 to the 12th power.  It avoids the difficulties posed by the European &quot;milliard,&quot; because their definition of a billion is not a thousand million but a million million.
